What is a Pre-Expiry Auction?

Updated: 2026/06/16Viewed times: 9

Great news - we've expanded our Marketplace with Pre-Expiry Auctions. This is your chance to turn a soon-to-expire domain into profit, while buyers can discover high-quality .AI domains (more ccTLDs coming soon) starting at just $1 with no reserve (some with years of valuable history behind them).

How It Works

Dynadot users list expiring domains in Pre-Expiry Auctions starting at just $1 with no reserve. Once a Pre-Expiry Auction begins, buyers can place bids to compete for the domain. At the end of the auction, the highest bidder wins and has 2 calendar days to complete payment. If payment isn't received within that time, the domain will be offered to the second-place bidder, who then has 1 calendar day to complete payment. If payment is successful, the domain will be moved into the buyer's account.

If you want to bid on a Pre-Expiry Auction domain:

  • To bid on an auction, first create a Dynadot account if you don't have one. We require at least $5 account spending before you can participate in our Pre-Expiry Auctions. You can prepay $5 into your account and use the account credit to pay for your first won auction, or any other purchase with us.
  • All Pre-Expiry Auctions last 7 days and end automatically 5 days before expiration. Auctions starting less than 12 days before expiration may end early. You can bid anytime during that period. If a bid is received in the last 5 minutes of an auction, the end time will be extended by 5 minutes. There is no limit to the number of times an auction may be extended before the auction's final "end time" is set.
  • You may place a proxy bid for higher than the current minimum bid. If someone else places a bid, the system will automatically bid for you until your max proxy bid amount is reached. To place a bid of $2,000 or more, a deposit of 10% of the bid amount is required. Ensure your account balance can cover this fee, which will be locked until you are outbid or the order is paid. If you win the auction and choose not to pay for the order, the deposit will be forfeited as a non-payment fee.
  • If you win the auction, you have 48 hours to pay. Once you pay, the domain will be moved into your Dynadot account. If you're the second-highest bidder, you will have 24 hours to pay if the highest bidder doesn't pay.
  • Domains won in Pre-Expiry Auctions will be placed in "Buy Lock" status for 30 days.
  • Domains purchased from Pre-Expiry Auctions will not be renewed and will retain their original expiry date.

If you want to list your domain for a Pre-Expiry Auction:

  • We provide a step-by-step guide to help you list your domain for auction.
  • Supported TLDs: currently only .AI (more ccTLDs coming soon).
  • You can list your domain anytime 40 to 5 days before expiration.
  • Auctions begin immediately once you click List and save settings. You can cancel the auction at any time before a bid is placed.
  • Once listed, the auction begins immediately. Your domain cannot be unlocked, deleted, moved to another Dynadot account, or transferred to another registrar.
  • All Pre-Expiry Auctions last 7 days and end automatically 5 days before expiration. Auctions starting less than 12 days before expiration may end early.
  • Dynadot's auction commission is 15% of the final price. There is no listing fee at this time.
  • Auction proceeds are given in sales balance by default. This balance can be paid out or converted to account credit.
  • Domains registered with other registrars are not eligible for Pre-Expiry Auctions, but you can list them on our marketplace.
