Can or will dynadot backorder domains?
7/28/2007 06:55
I recently waited patiently for a specific domain to expire so I could purchase it at dynadot prices. Almost 18 months

But one of these greedy companies bought it within minutes, then had the cheek to try and then sell it to me for almost 200 times the amount. They have parked it and filled it with bogus links.

I would love to be able to pay dynadot and backorder domains I intend to use.

If this is not an option, can anyone point me in the right direction.

Dear Dynadot Staff,

I support this Idea. We trust on dynadot.

Please add this "Domain Back Order" in your features request. Have a nice day.

Regards

Snapnames.com
Pool.com
Enom.com
or
Godaddy.com

will all backorder your domain(s) for you.  Dynadot do not have enough batch pool connections to actively compete in the drop market.

I'm fairly new to Dynadot and have nothing but praise for their service, especially having endured the RegisterFly fiasco. My one comment regarding backorder domains is better that Dynadot do the 'basic' stuff as competently as they do now and hopefully grow and prosper, than try to be all things to all men and try to compete in a market where they are not strong. From the honesty of their response I think Dynadot have a great business model and long may it continue !

We can offer a simple system that checks a domain every few minutes, and registers it if it is available. This feature is already in our feature request database.

But with only one connection, we will have a hard time competing for the highly desired domains with the drop specialists. Some of them have dozens of connections going at the same time.

I used to register around 10 dropping .info domains per day. Apart from one or 2 high value domains each day (eg. lll.info) which mostly go to Pool.com I managed to take whichever of the remainder I wanted just by using a fast API to a normal registrar (actually I used to use Dynadot till you broke it!)

Anyway those days are over now because there is one registrar , with I presume one batch pool connection , who is warehousing around 50 .info domains per day , everything of value over $30 or so , again apart from the ones which go to snapnames or pool - which tells me they do not have more than one connection.

I tried to sign up with them but they do not offer the dropcatch service to the public (webagentur.at / rubalier) which basically means they are a closed registrar warehousing domains.

So if Dynadot were able to mobilise even one drop pool connection for some of the more ordinary domains - .info / .org / .net even..  , and at normal reg prices (WWD can do backorders as low as $10 or so if you sign up to their investor service - just that their interface stinks) then I think it would be used . You simply need to state that the service will only compete against hand / API reggers and not pooled drop catchers.

That is presuming you do not already rent out you connection to pool.com etc.

Cheers

Dynadot has only one connection pool so it will be hard to compete against dropcatchers that use tens of registrars for the purpose of catching domains.
Godaddy must have 8 registrar credentials, yet they do seldom beat the other dropcatchers...

I have used namejet.com -- which is an Enom partner with other registrars -- but 50% of the time a domain vanishes mid auction for unexplained circumstances. Also, minimum fee is usually $60.

What is "batch pool" mean?

What do you mean, "fast API connection"? I do know what API stands for (Application Program Interface) -- so does that mean you have specially written software or some CGI setup?

registrars get to register dropping domains before their customers see them through the normal reg interfaces/API etc.

a fast API connection is the next best thing - it will beat anyone who is hand regging domains but not registrars warehousing or backorders - these are all using the above drop pool pre-access

a fast API means simply a fast server on a network near your registrar running a script which talks to the API as fast as possible and gets the name within a fraction of a second of it being released to the public

FYI GoDaddy do catch domains fairly well - it just depends what you are chasing. For the .com drops each day they are in demand from everyone and I imagine 70% of all the drop pool connections out there are being mobilised to get .coms - most of them pooled together working for pool.com, snapnames and one or 2 others. That means they probably have 30+ connections working for them - which is why they generally get the names - and why GD cannot usually compete with just their 8, and admittedly a lack of interest in domain drops by and large. GD is however the cheapest backorder service (works out $8 with a reseller account and domain investor subscription) and it is a sure way to catch any domain which does not fall into the hands of snapnames and pool - ie. before anyone else can hand reg even with fast connections and scripts.
