5 Interesting Domain Facts

Did you know that there are over 113,746,728 .COM domains registered to date? With the likelihood of this number increasing everyday, registering your first domain pick may no longer be available in the .COM world. Luckily, there are tons of new TLD options you can now chose from to make the domain shopping process a little easier. You can even check out the Internet Statistics on WHOIS and get a general feel as to which domains are more popular and how many are registered in each TLD. To make things a bit more interesting, I've put together a few more fun domain facts to make you feel more in tune with the domain industry.

1. All three-lettered .COM domains have been registered

In case you haven't already noticed, the chances of you finding a three lettered .COM domain are slim to none. The domains are extremely popular because they are short and easy to remember. If you are lucky enough to come across one, have your check book ready- these pricey domains can cost you a fortune and have been gone ever since 1997.

2. You cannot buy an ‘a’ .COM address

Every website address that is composed entirely of the letter ‘A’, from right up to are already registered. Don't ask me why or for what reason, but someone clearly sees the vowel as a valuable domain name.

3. Registering a domain used to be entirely FREE

Until 1995 domain name registrations were free! In 1995, Network Solutions was granted the authority to start charging for domain names which started at $100 for 2 years of registration and then fell to $70 in 1997. Ever since ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) was created domain registrations prices have dropped considerably and made more affordable for consumers.

4. Coca Cola dominates .COM with "ahh"

Coca Cola owns all the domain names that can be read as ‘ahh’. Such as,,, and so on… all the way up to 62 h’s! We didn't believe it when we found out, but it is in fact entirely true- pretty clever if you ask me!

5. was supposed to be

As Larry Page, the co-founder of narrates: "Lucas Pereira: 'You idiots, you spelled [Googol] wrong!' However, at the time was available and was not- so I guess it all worked out in the end!
