What is Dynamic DNS (DDNS)?

Dynamic DNS is a useful service that automatically updates your domain with a new IP address whenever it changes. This ensures that your domain stays connected to the corresponding server. For instance, if you host a website on your computer using a server at home, and your IP address changes every time you connect to the Internet, you can make use of Dynamic DNS to ensure that your domain stays connected. This will allow you to have a more reliable website that is consistently available to your users.

What is the difference between Dynamic DNS and DNS?

DNS and DDNS are two ways to translate domain names into IP addresses. The main difference between them is that while DNS uses a static IP address, DDNS updates the IP address automatically based on changes in the network. DNS is universally supported by all DNS servers and is used worldwide to resolve domain names to IP addresses. However, DDNS requires the support of specific DDNS providers. To use DDNS, you must subscribe to DDNS services and configure your devices or routers to work with the chosen DDNS provider.

If you would like to enable Dynamic DNS on your domains, please follow the steps here.

NOTE:

  • Your domain must be set to Dynadot DNS to use Dynamic DNS.
  • Enabling Dynamic DNS will replace any conflicting DNS records, such as Forwarding, Stealth Forwarding, CNAME, ANAME, etc., with A(IPv4)/AAAA(IPv6) records specifically for your domain.
