Name Server Settings

  • Are there limits to email forwarding?

Yes, there are a couple of different limits to our email forwarding: You can specify up to 10 domain emails to be forwarded. We will forward up to 500 emails per day for your domain name. Any emails above that limit will not be accepted by our email forwarding server. The email will either bounce or be delayed until you are under your 500 email limit again. You cannot respond using your domain email address as this is only a forwarding service, meaning you can only receive emails to your domain email address. You can only use our email forwarding if you are using our name servers. If you are using someone else's name servers, you will need to set up your email forwarding settings on those name servers. Want access to unlimited email addresses for your domain without any limits? Check out our Email Hosting or Website Builder Business Plan.

  • I just changed my name server settings. Why are they not updated yet?

It takes time for all of the zone name servers located all over the world to update their lists. So, when you change your name server options in your Dynadot account, these changes must be updated to all zone name servers before your domain displays the correct web page. This is what people mean by waiting for their domain to resolve, since the zone name servers will, at first, contain your old name server settings until they update. Depending on the central registry (Verisign, etc.), they may update within five minutes or (very rarely) take a whole day to update. Use the IP lookup tool in your Dynadot account to determine if your name server settings have been propagated.

  • How do I set or change the default name server setting of a smart domain folder?

To set or change your default name server settings for a smart folder, please follow these steps: Sign in to your Dynadot account. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click "Folders" in the drop-down. Click on the blue link under the "DNS" column. After the page loads, you should see a place to enter you name servers (This will look the same as the name server settings when you set name servers for individual domains). You can choose to enter name servers, set your domains to parking, forwarding, or stealth forwarding, set your domain to Dynadot Email Hosting, specify DNS records, or set up email forwarding. Choose your name server settings and save them. Saving the name servers for your folder will not affect the domains in the folder unless you choose to "Save and Apply to All Domains". • What are name servers?

A name server is a server that returns an IP address when given a domain name. This IP address is basically the domain's location on the Internet. Sometimes name servers are referred as DNS servers (and vice versa) because they essentially perform the same function; when given a domain name, they return the IP address for that domain. The difference is that with DNS, the domain owner will be setting the IP addresses to your domain and your mail server(s). For domains registered at Dynadot, you will be using the Dynadot servers, however, you will be setting up the IP addresses. If you are using name servers obtained from your web host, you are using your web host's servers, and they typically set up the IP addresses for you. Basically, DNS is where you set the IP address for your domain while with name servers, your web host sets the IP address for you. If you are using our web hosting, these are our name servers you can set your domain to use. Find out how to set your domain's name servers. Find out how to set up DNS for your domain.

  • What are zone name servers?

Zone name servers (also known as root name servers) are servers that maintain a list of every domain's name servers. In summary, they tell web browsers where to find a certain domain's name servers. Then the domain's name servers tell the browser where that domain's website is located by returning an IP address. When you set or change your name servers, all of the zone name servers around the world must update their lists, which takes time. This is why it might take some time for your name server changes to propagate.
