Account & Domain Security
- What is the "Domain Lock" feature?
The "Domain Lock" feature is similar to our "Account Lock" feature, but it applies a lock to each individual domain, as opposed to your entire account. Having each individual domain locked as well as your account locked, helps insure that your account stays secure and no domains are hijacked. Before you unlock your domain or domains, you will need to unlock your account. We recommend setting up 2 step verification with your account to add an additional layer of security. Having your domain locked is the default setting. Find out how to know if your domain is locked.
- When will I be required to enter my "birthday"?
The first time you login to your Dynadot account, we ask you to set up a "birthday," which does not need to be your actual birthday, but should be a date that you will be able to remember. This is a part of our account security. You will be asked to enter your "birthday" whenever you want to unlock your account. Reasons for unlocking your account include editing your account info and unlocking your domains. In addition to your "birthday," we also have options to add SMS Authentication and/or Google Authenticator, which we recommend doing to increase your account and domain security. Please note that if you forget your "birthday," you may be required to submit identification.
- How do I submit a "Forgot Birthday" request?
Dynadot takes your account security seriously. This is why we ask you to enter a "birthday" on your first login. Your "birthday" is a memorable date that you chose and is not necessarily your birthday. It is required for certain account functions such as editing your account info and unlocking your domains. If you have forgotten your "birthday," you need to submit a "Forgot Birthday" request by following these steps: Sign in to your Dynadot account. Select "My Info" from the left-side menu bar and click "Security" in the drop-down. Click on the "Unlock Account" button next to the "Account Lock" section. Click on the "Forgot Birthday" link. Enter the information in the provided form. Press the "Submit Request" button to submit your request. A manager will then contact you via email regarding your request. Please note that it can take up to 2 business days to process your request; however, it is usually faster. You may be asked to send in identification to prove you are the account owner.
- How do I turn off my SMS Authenticator settings?
SMS Authenticator, along with your "birthday" and Google Authenticator is a great way to add extra security to your account. This is why we recommend keeping it as a part of your account security. But, if you do want to remove SMS Authenticator from your Dynadot account, please follow these steps: Sign in to your Dynadot account. Click "My Info" from the left-side menu bar, then click "Security". Click Unlock Account, you will need to enter an SMS code (as well as your birthday and your token code if you also have Google Authenticator set up) to successfully unlock your account. If you are unable to enter your SMS code, use the "Lost Cellphone" link to contact us for help. Once your account is unlocked, scroll down to the "SMS Authentication" section. You will need to enter your password for security, then click "Disable SMS" to turn it off. We recommend relocking your account by clicking "Lock Account Now" at the top of the page when you are done.
- How do I turn off Google Authenticator?
Google Authenticator, along with your "birthday" and SMS Authenticator is a great way to add extra security to your account. This is why we recommend keeping it as a part of your account security. But, if you do want to remove Google Authenticator from your Dynadot account, please follow these steps: Sign in to your Dynadot account. Click "My Info" from the left-side menu bar, then click "Security". Click Unlock Account. You will be required to enter a token code from your Google Authenticator app (as well as your "birthday" and SMS code if you also have this enabled). If you can't enter your token code, use the "Lost Cellphone" link for help. Once unlocked, please scroll down to the "Google Authentication" section. Enter your password for security. Then click "Disable Google Authentication" to turn it off. We recommend relocking your account by clicking "Lock Account Now" at the top of the page when you are done. Then, click on the red minus sign over your "Dynadot:username" account and click "Remove Account" to confirm its removal from the app. Please make sure you have already performed the steps above before removing it from the app.
- What is the "Account Lock" feature?
The "Account Lock" feature is a security feature used to prevent anyone from hijacking your domains and/or changing important account information. You are required to verify your identity before the system allows you to unlock your domains and/or change your account details. We recommend adding 2 step verification to your account to further enhance your account and domain security. Please note that if left unlocked, our system will automatically lock it again for your security after 1 hour.

- What are the SMS settings for?
SMS settings are used to add additional security to your account. All accounts require a "birthday," but it is a good idea to also add our two-factor authentications settings. These include SMS authentication, which uses your cellphone's Short Message Service, aka texting service, to verify your identity when you unlock your account. You can also add Google Authenticator either in addition to SMS or instead of SMS. Both of these settings are optional, however, they can increase the security of your Dynadot account. NOTE: Carrier fees may apply for any SMS message sent to your cellphone. How do I activate my SMS Authentication settings? When will I be required to enter my SMS Autehnticator code? - Why do you need a birthday and secret question and answer from me?
Dynadot takes your account security seriously. This is why we ask you to enter a secret question and answer as well as a "birthday" on your first login. The information you enter should be valid information that you will be able to remember as we will ask for this information during certain account functions such as editing your account info and unlocking your domains. Your "birthday" does not need to be your actual birthday, but should be a date that you will be able to remember. If you do forget it, you'll need to submit a forgot birthday request. Your secret question should be something a stranger would not know about you. For example: Question: favorite food Answer: apple Please note that in the future, your secret answer must be entered exactly as it was when you created it. So, for the example above, "Apple" or "APPLE" would be seen as incorrect by our system. When will I be required to enter my "birthday"? When will I be required to enter my secret answer and question?
