New TLDs

  • What is General Availability?

General Availability (GA) period is the period after a new top-level domain (nTLD) is officially launched to the public. During this time, domain registrations are simply done on a first come, first serve basis. Any TLD listed on our TLD prices page is in GA. What are the launch phases of a new TLD? What is Sunrise period? What is Landrush period? What is Early Access period?

  • What is a domain preorder?

We offer preorders for new TLDs that have not yet launched. Placing a preorder allows you the opportunity to try and register the domain name you want right when the new TLD launches. When you place a preorder with us, your order will remain open until the new TLD you ordered launches. On the launch date, we will attempt to register the domain name you ordered. If we are unable to register the domain you ordered, you receive an account credit. NOTE: A preorder is not the same as an order made during the New TLD's Sunrise or Landrush periods. We do not support the new TLD Sunrise or Landrush periods (in most cases). We only accept 1 preorder (must be paid) for each domain. First come, first serve. Preordered domains cannot be grace deleted. Preorders may be cancelled by our system if there is a trademark claim in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). Preorders may be cancelled if the preordered domain, initially quoted at normal pricing, is later determined to be a registry premium domain. (This is set by the central registry.) Registry premium domains are sold at a higher cost than normal domains. Preorders for domains that are marked as restricted or reserved cannot be registered. We will make every effort to keep our preorder search accurate, but due to the sheer volume of new TLDs being released, our preorder search may not have the most current reserved list.

  • Does Dynadot support the new TLDs?

Yes, we will be supporting most of the new TLDs that are set to launch starting in 2014 and beyond. We also support preordering the domain name you want before the new TLD launches (for some TLDs)! Want to see what new TLDs will be launching soon? Check out the Launching TLDs section of our TLD page. You can also see the full list of what we support on that same page. Curious what launched in 2014 and 2015? We have a 2014 New TLD Launch Date Infographic and a 2015 New TLD Launch Date Infographic!

  • When are the new TLDs launching?

Not all of the new TLDs have official launch dates yet, but we keep a list on our TLD page under the "Launching TLDs" section. If you want to check out past launch dates, we have a 2015 New TLD Launch Date infographic and a 2014 New TLD Launch Date Infographic. If you are interested in registering a new TLD that has not yet launched, you can check our preorder page where you can attempt to register your dream domain name before it officially launches! (This page is updated as we receive pricing for upcoming new TLDs and may not include all launching TLDs.) You can also visit our blog where you can stay informed about all the new TLD information or check out the New TLD section of our help files. Check out our TLD page to see a full list of the TLDs we support.

  • What is the difference between the launch date and the grab date of a new TLD?

Some new TLDs have both a launch date and a grab date. The reason for this is usually because the new TLD has a "Early Access General Availability" period. This period is before the official launch of the domain. In this case, we will attempt to register a preordered domain name on the grab date, which is the official launch date for that domain. This is also because the price to register domains during the Early Access period is much higher. An example of this is Donuts' Early Access General Availability period, which runs for 7 days before launch.

  • What is ICANN's New gTLD Program?

ICANN's New gTLD Program is an initiative to introduce new top-level domains (TLDs) to the Domain Name System (DNS) in what has been the largest expansion to date. ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and all the way back in 2005, they began planning out a process to consider new gTLDs. The process involved several rounds of applications followed by evaluation and, if approved, eventually delegation. The first applications were accepted in January of 2012 and over 1,930 were received. Two years later, in January of 2014, the first new gTLDs became available for registration. Since then more than 1,200 new gTLDs have been delegated. Although we don't offer all 1,200 new gTLDs, we do support over 500 TLDs (both old and new). See our full list and find your dream domain today!

  • What are new TLDs (nTLDs)?

New TLDs (nTLDs) are top-level domain extensions that were released starting in January 2014. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, started the New gTLD Program with the goal of enabling the largest expansion of the Domain Name System (DNS) to date. Since this program began, there have been over 1200 new gTLDs delegated. The first group of gTLDs were originally launched in 1985. Since then there have been a few other TLD launches including .INT in 1988, seven TLDs in 2000 including .BIZ, .INFO, .NAME, and .PRO, six "sponsored" TLDs (sTLDs) in 2004 including .MOBI and .TEL, and finally .XXX in 2011. As you can see, no other TLD launches have allowed for as much expansion as the most recent new TLDs. Although, we have not launched all 1200 new TLDs, we do currently offer over 500 TLDs for registration (both old and new). Check out our full list of TLDs to find your dream domain today! You can also check out our domain categories to help you narrow down the TLD that's right for you!

  • What is a Priority Access Period?

A Priority Access Period is a special period that Verisign is having for each of their new international language top-level domain (TLD) launches. Verisign is the central registry for .COM, .NET, .TV, .CC, and, now, the new international language versions of .COM and .NET. As they launch these new international language versions of .COM and .NET, they are having what is called a "Priority Access Period" for each domain. During this period, domain owners have the opportunity to register their same domain name on the international language version of their TLD. For example, if you own yourname.com, you can register yourname.닷컴 during .닷컴's Priority Access Period and no one else can register that same domain name on .닷컴 during this time. To take advantage of Priority Access, you will need to first log in to the Dynadot account that has the exact match domain name you want to register in it. This domain name must have been registered before Priority Access began and it must no longer be eligible for grace deletion. Then, you can search for the matching domain name on the TLD's page, so for the above example, you would need to visit the .닷컴 page (link is below). Verisign has launched the following new TLDs so far: .コムƒ  - Japanese Katakana version of .COMPriority Access Period: 3/15/16 00:00 UTC - 5/16/16 00:00 UTCLandrush Period: 5/16/16 00:00 UTC - 6/13/16 00:00 UTCGeneral Availability: 6/13/16 00:00 UTC .닷컴 - Korean version of .COM & .닷넷 - Korean version of .NETPriority Access Period: 6/20/16 00:00 UTC - 8/16/16 00:00 UTCLandrush Period: 8/16/16 00:00 UTC - 8/30/16 00:00 UTCGeneral Availability: 8/30/16 00:00 UTC Priority Access Period does not have an additional fee. The current price is $12.99 (though this is subject to change per Verisign). Landrush, however, does have an additional fee. Verisign will be launching several more international language TLDs and this file will be updated as we receive more info.

  • What is Early Access General Availability?

Early Access General Availability is a special period that is available for certain new TLDs before they officially launch into General Availability. Typically, this period lasts about a week and offers registrants the opportunity to register a domain name at a premium price before the official launch. The premium price is adjusted almost daily with the first day being the highest price and the last day being the lowest price (though the pricing is still higher than the general pricing will be at launch). Interested individuals, organizations, businesses, and others can register names on a first-come, first-served, non-restricted basis. Whether a new TLD participates in an Early Access Period is up to the central registry. Both Donuts and Rightside new TLDs typically have an Early Access Period before launch. For Donuts TLDs, each day of Early Access will begin at 16:00 UTC and end at 16:00 UTC the following calendar day. Rightside TLDs will start and end at 17:00 UTC. The hour will match the launch date hour shown on the TLD page. The following Early Access Period price table applies to Donuts and Rightside's program pricing only (and is subject to change per the registry): EA DAY Price Day 1 $12,000 Day 2 $3,000 Day 3 $1,200 Day 4 $600 Day 5-7 $150 or $225 Domains registered during Early Access Period are non-refundable and cannot be grace deleted. Domains registered during Donuts' or Rightside's Early Access Period have regular renewal and transfer pricing. To see if a domain is under the Donuts or Rightside central registry, visit that domain's TLD page and check the "Registry" section under the "Domain Information" table.

  • Why was my domain preorder cancelled?

There are a few reasons why your preorder may have been cancelled: Preorders may be cancelled by our system if there is a trademark claim in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). If your preorder is cancelled, you will be given a refund in account credit.
