Domain with different name server and MX records
10/12/2006 17:23
My domain e-mail is hosted through Google Hosted E-mail. However my web host was down all today which caused my e-mail to go down (I have the MX record name set at my host).

Is it possible to set an MX record at the registrar level, so that my name servers for my site and e-mail are totally separate, and if my web host goes down I can continue to use my e-mail?

<edit>Does my question make sense?</edit>

<edit2>If it's not possible is there a third party solution anyone is aware of?</edit2>

Hello,

Yes, your question makes sense, however, what you are suggesting as a solution is technically impossible.  This is because the name servers for your domain are also the used to direct your domain's email.  We cannot set your MX records unless your domain is also using our name servers.

You could try using our Dynadot DNS option, but you will need to enter in the IP address of your web server.  The reason why this works is that you will be using our name servers if you choose to use the Dynadot DNS option for your domain's name server settings.

Another option is to visit a site such as freedns.afraid.org. They offer free DNS services. If you set your first two name servers as your webhosts names servers, you can set the next two as the freedns ones. this means if the webhosts go down, it will use freedns instead, where you can point it to the same email hosting, and also a different web host with a backup copy of the site.

I have tried to enter differnet name server for e-mails (alt1.aspmx.l.google.com) , IP 66.249.83.27, but then I can not receive any mail. I can sent mail but I can not receive any.
What I'm doing wrong?

We have checked your DNS settings, and it appears that you have set up your MX Records correctly, though you should not use the IP address, 66.249.83.27, as the IP address for your domain's web server since it is the IP address for your mail server, only.

If you wish to look into this further, we suggest that you email us directly instead of posting all the information here.  (Mostly for privacy reasons.)
