What We Learned At SXSW

When I was asked to represent Dynadot at South by Southwest - or SXSW for short - earlier this month, I was excited about the chance to attend one of the most talked about tech and media conferences. Going into the conference, I didn't really know what to expect. On top of it being my first time at SXSW, it was also my first time visiting Austin, TX.

If there is one word to describe this conference, I think it'd be: overwhelming. There is a lot going on! It's not just in one place either; there are things going on across the city of Austin. If you're planning to go, just know that you'll always be missing something. Choose wisely when it comes to what you want to attend and be prepared to not be able to get in to things (especially if you're here for work). I experienced this firsthand as, sadly, I was part of the last group to NOT get in to a comedy event one night.

Of course, the real reason I was there was for Dynadot. At the event, Dynadot partnered with Verisign, the .COM registry, to provide a lounge area in the Hilton, which is next to the main conference center. The area where we were located was near many tech-focused sessions on subjects including net neutrality, what startups should know, attracting VC investments, diversity in tech, bridging the rural and urban divide, and more.

One of the best things about our lounge was the peace and quiet. SXSW is a busy and bustling event. We provided a place to relax on a comfortable white couch, grab a drink and a snack, and, of course, a free .COM domain and website! Plus, Verisign invited Alexandra Watkins, a brand name expert, who met with and helped several people throughout the conference.

In the lounge, we met a range of people. We helped startups make that first step and register their domain name. We also helped startups register an alternate domain name to the one they already had. We had people register their name on .COM. We talked to students, lawyers, inventors, engineers, and more. We even made someone's day when he registered his daughter's name on .COM for 10 years!

Hopefully we'll be back at SXSW next year too. Want to see us at an upcoming event? Check out our events page to see where we'll be next!
