The Beginning

However, the term meme has been around since 1976 from a biologist Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene. Dawkin’s conception of the word meme as “ a unit of cultural transmission”, where we can definitely see how the term has stayed true to its meaning today.

 

The early internet has paved the way for memes to find their homes for humorous websites like 4chan, 9gag, and Reddit. One popular meme around this time was the top and bottom text style images, which were still images and some punchlines. Shortly after “Rage Comics” took over, these were messy illustrations that touched on real-life experiences thus making it viral across the web.

With how fast the internet was growing, so did memes. Throughout time memes have become much more widespread and have impacted the world from a marketing strategy to even being informed about trending news. It all started from still images and eventually moving onto viral videos. These viral videos quickly changed our everyday usage of our preferred social media including Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, and even birthed a new app called Vine (once here before TikTok). Today we can all agree that we have taken part in making a meme, and the rest is history with more great memes awaiting in the future.
