Running a small business means your to-do list never ends, and figuring out how to build a website shouldn't take up a week of it.

But a website is an important part of building a business today, and that’s even more true in the age of AI. “Customers look to verify you by checking your website,” says Ilan Shaki, Head of Global B2B Channel Partnerships at Wix. And your website is still where customers go to buy and book your services, he says.

How to build a website with Wix: an overview

Wix's AI website builder is the fastest way to get a professional business website live. No design skills or coding required. You simply describe your business, then Aria (Wix's AI agent) builds a real site you can edit and you take it from there.

In this article, you'll learn:

  • How to create your account and describe your business to Aria
  • How to customize your design and add your own content
  • How to connect a domain and set up hosting and business email
  • What types of business sites you can build with Wix
  • How much a Wix website costs

How to build a website with Wix: step-by-step

01. Search for your domain and start building

Researching domains is a good place to start. Search for the name that fits your business on Dynadot, and once you find it, add it to your cart. From there, you'll be prompted straight into the Wix site-building flow. There's no separate Wix signup to complete, since your account is already set up from your Dynadot login.

At this point, you'll choose a Wix plan. If you select a Premium plan that includes a website, you can get your domain for free, so it's worth comparing plans before you check out.

Already own a domain through Dynadot? Go to your Dynadot control panel, open Manage Domains, click the domain you want to use, and follow the prompt to start building on Wix.

When choosing between domain extensions, keep in mind that a .com domain is still the go-to: 82% of Wix sites in the U.S. use .com as their extension, according to a new Wix report.

02. Describe your business to Aria

Once you start a new site, Aria will ask a few questions: what your business does, what you want the site to accomplish and what style you're going for. The more specific you are, the better the result. "I run a dog grooming studio in Austin and want to take bookings online" will get you a far more useful starting point than "I have a small business."

Aria takes your input and generates a full site, including multiple pages, sections, images and copy, in under a minute. It won't be perfect out of the box, but it gives you a real foundation to build from rather than a blank page.

03. Review and refine your AI-generated site

Then, you'll see a live preview of your site. Click through every page, check that the structure makes sense and note what needs to change. Think of this as your rough draft. Everything is editable and nothing is permanent.

Aria is your collaborator during the editing process. “You can have Aria create a new section, add text, pull in best-selling items, insert images and even add linked buttons, all at once,” says Yarin Singolda, product marketing manager at Wix Harmony.

For example, you can tell her: "Make the homepage header bolder" or "Add a testimonials section below the services.” If your brand has specific colors or a logo, upload them and Aria can apply them across the whole site in one step.

04. Customize your design

You can also make changes yourself manually if you prefer. Click any text, image or section to edit it in place. Change fonts, swap colors, resize elements and rearrange sections, all with standard drag-and-drop.

Pay close attention to the mobile view, too. Many of your visitors will be on their phones, and Wix automatically adapts your layout for mobile. But it's worth a manual check. Toggle to mobile view from the editor toolbar and go through every page.

05. Add pages and content

Use the Pages panel to add any pages your business needs: Services, About, Contact, Pricing, Blog. Replace Aria's placeholder content with your own, upload your photos, write your actual copy and fill in your real business details.

If you need more functionality, head to the Wix App Market. Apps like Wix Bookings, Wix Stores and Wix Forms install in one click and connect directly to your site.

06. Connect your domain

Wix offers domain registration directly through the platform. But if you bought your domain through the Premium plan flow above, this step is already done; your Dynadot domain connects to your Wix site automatically as part of setup, no DNS work required.

To connect your Dynadot domain, you'll find the option in one of two places: on the confirmation page right after you purchase your domain, or later from your Dynadot dashboard under Manage Domains. Either entry point takes you into Wix, where the connection is handled for you.

07. Set up hosting and business email

"One thing people often overlook when choosing a website builder is the strength of the infrastructure behind it,” says Rebecca Tomasis, Head of Organic Growth at Wix. “Hosting reliability, built-in security and site performance may not be the first things on your mind when building a website, but scaling can become complicated without a strong foundation."

Wix provides free website hosting for every site on its platform. It's built in, not bolted on. There's no separate hosting plan to purchase, no servers to configure and no surprise downtime bills. Wix handles infrastructure, traffic spikes and global content delivery, so your site stays fast and available without any extra work on your end.

While you're in the dashboard, set up a business email address that matches your domain. A business email that uses your domain looks more credible to customers than a generic one, and Wix makes it easy to set up from the same place you manage everything else.

08. Preview and publish

Click Preview to see your site as visitors will. Check every page, click every button and test your contact form. Once you're happy, hit Publish and your site goes live instantly.

Don't wait until everything is perfect. A live "good" site beats a draft "perfect" site every time, and you can keep editing and republishing whenever you're ready.

What you can build with Wix

Wix handles a wide range of business site types. Services businesses like consultants, freelancers, coaches and tradespeople typically need a services page, an about section, a contact form and a booking tool. All of that is available right out of the box.

If you're selling products, Wix Stores integrates directly with the editor and supports physical products, digital downloads and subscriptions. Restaurants and food businesses can set up menus, online ordering and table reservations without needing a developer.

For businesses that need more technical flexibility, a custom front-end or a decoupled architecture, Wix Headless is worth exploring. It gives you Wix's backend (CMS, eCommerce, bookings, business tools) while letting you build your own front-end in any framework you choose. It's not the typical starting point for a first site, but it's a powerful option.

How to build a website with Wix FAQ

Can I build a Wix website for free?

Yes. Wix has a free plan that lets you create and publish a site right away. The main limitations: your site will have Wix-branded ads and a Wix subdomain instead of a custom domain. Most small business owners upgrade to a paid plan to remove those and unlock business tools.

How much does a Wix website cost?

The Light plan covers most solo service businesses for $17 a month: custom domain connection, no Wix ads and basic site analytics. The Core plan adds eCommerce basics and more storage for $29 a month, which works well for small product stores. Higher-tier Business and Business Elite plans add advanced eCommerce, more staff accounts and priority support for $39 a month and $159 a month, respectively.

How long does it take to build a website with Wix?

With Wix's AI website builder, you can have a complete, live website in a few hours. The average site is built in four days, according to Wix’s State of Websites report. Aria generates your initial site in under a minute. The rest of the time is customization: swapping in your own content, photos and branding, connecting your domain and doing a final review before publishing.

Do I need coding experience to use Wix?

No. Wix is built for people who don't write code. Everything works through plain-language prompts to Aria or drag-and-drop editing in the visual editor. If you do know code, Wix supports custom CSS and has advanced developer tools, but they're entirely optional.

Can I switch from the AI to editing manually?

Yes, and that's the whole idea. You use Aria to generate or change something, edit the result manually, then go back to Aria for the next thing. There's no locked-in mode. You move between AI and manual editing however it suits your workflow.

Is Wix good for small business websites?

Yes. Wix is a strong fit for small businesses that need a professional site without the cost of a custom build. It covers the core needs: clean design, mobile responsiveness, SEO tools, booking, payments and eCommerce, and it scales as your business grows.

What happens to my site if I downgrade my Wix plan?

If you downgrade to the free plan, your site stays live but reverts to a Wix subdomain and Wix ads come back. You won't lose your content or design. Everything stays intact. Your domain will need to be renewed separately to keep it connected.
