Introduction

July 2026 was defined by scale and consolidation. Verisign's quarterly numbers and the latest Domain Name Industry Brief confirmed a market that keeps growing across nearly every category, capped by the long-awaited delegation of .WEB.

Around that headline, the month brought a steady stream of registry launches and handovers, fresh policy activity at ICANN, and a premium market that continues to reward short, memorable names.

Below is a roundup of the stories worth knowing, followed by July's top reported domain sales.

Verisign Posts Record Quarter and Announces .WEB Is Delegated

Verisign reported a record second quarter, and the broader industry crossed a notable milestone: according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief, there were 401.6 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains at the end of Q2 2026. Combined .COM and .NET registrations reached 179.1 million, with ccTLDs at 148.6 million and new gTLDs at 52.9 million.

Verisign's own quarter reflected that strength. The .COM and .NET TLDs had a combined increase of 8.6 million domain name registrations, or 5.1%, year over year. Verisign announced that .WEB has been delegated into the DNS root zone with Verisign as the registry operator.

ICANN Board Seat Up for Grabs

ICANN's Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) is seeking nominations for a board seat, currently held by Byron Holland of .CA registry CIRA.

The ccNSO fills two of ICANN's board seats on behalf of the country-code community, so the appointment carries real weight in how the organization is governed and how ccTLD interests are represented. The seat is up for grabs next year, and nominations are now being accepted.

.DOT Is Coming Very Soon

Dish DBS is preparing to launch .DOT, pitched to "builders and the things they create." Sunrise runs July 21 to October 19, 2026, followed by a 12-day Early Access Period from July 22, and general availability on November 2.

It's Dish's second gTLD of the year after .LATINO, which launched in June but has seen slow early adoption with fewer than 800 registrations so far. The registry has reserved Dot.dot as its own primary domain.

Bali to Apply for .BALI

The Indonesian province of Bali is set to apply for the .BALI top-level domain, with the local government supporting the bid. If it moves ahead, .BALI would join a small but growing group of geographic TLDs that tie a place's identity to a dedicated online space and give local businesses, tourism boards, and residents a distinctly regional address.

The application is expected to be formally announced at ICANN 87 in October. Fittingly, that meeting is being held in Bali itself.

Google Sets Launch Dates for .EAT, .HERE, and .FLY

Google Registry is releasing three TLDs first applied for in 2012: .EAT, .HERE, and .FLY. The strings target distinct niches:

  • .EAT for restaurants and food
  • .HERE for location-based uses such as "click.here"
  • .FLY for travel and aviation

A trademark sunrise for .EAT and .HERE runs September 1 to November 9, 2026, with an Early Access phase November 10–17 and general availability from November 17. All three require HTTPS.

Identity Digital Takes Over Ireland's .IE

Following a vote by ICANN's board, IE Domain Registry (IEDR) has formally taken control of Ireland's .IE. University College Dublin had held the formal delegation since the late 1980s but had outsourced day-to-day management to IEDR since 2000, so the change mainly brings the paperwork in line with how the registry has operated for more than two decades. ICANN reported no significant concerns from the university or the local internet community.

A .网站 (".WEBSITE") Registry Changes Hands

As .WEB reached delegation, Identity Digital's Jolly Host acquired control of .网站, the Chinese-language equivalent of ".WEBSITE," from Hong Kong-based Global Website TLD Asia.

Despite targeting China's enormous market with an intuitive term, the extension remains thinly populated, holding roughly 2,871 registered names. The deal marks Identity Digital's seventh gTLD contract reassignment since February 2026, underscoring how quickly it is absorbing smaller registries.

Spending $40K on a Domain Name to Eliminate Friction

ZipChat founder Ruslan explained the reasoning behind paying $40,000 for ZipChat.com, even though the company operates on ZipChat.ai: the .COM strengthens brand credibility and recall while removing friction in customer acquisition. As he put it, "a domain name remains a permanent business asset that continues to deliver value at a very low annual cost," framing the purchase as a lasting asset rather than a recurring marketing expense.

I spent $40,000 on a domain we won't even use, here's why:
- We're investing massively into brand awareness for @Zipchat (YouTube, Social Media & so on)
- Majority of our search traffic (Google; App store) comes from the keyword "zipchat" Most people just type http://zipchat.com and then go to Google when the site doesn't load.
We just eliminated this friction. Even if we get 1 customer per month from this, it's still going to have a positive ROI over the long term.

Top Domain Sales β€” July 2026

July's list points to continued strength at the top of the market, with .COM leading the way and a healthy showing from .AI and other extensions. Short, brandable names again commanded premium prices.

.COM claimed six of the ten spots, but the standout non-.COM result was Source.ai at $200,000. This domain was brokered through a partnership between Fruits.co and registrar OpusDNS, and ranking among the five largest .AI sales of the year so far. fruits.co founder Fabian Heuschele pointed to "high demand for premium domains worldwide" as companies increasingly recognize how crucial the right domain has become to building a strong brand.

Alongside that .AI momentum, short and brandable .COM names (from Evan.com to KBF.com) continued to anchor the top of the list, a reminder that memorable, friction-free names still set the ceiling on price.

Market Sentiment

July 2026 showed an industry that is both growing and maturing. The 401.6 million-domain milestone and Verisign's record quarter point to healthy underlying demand.

At the same time, the delegation of .WEB and the steady churn of registry handovers (.IE, .网站) and fresh launches (.DOT, Google's .EAT/.HERE/.FLY) suggest a namespace that keeps expanding even as attention consolidates around the biggest operators. On the aftermarket, buyers continued to pay real money to remove friction and lock in brandable, memorable names.

Looking Ahead

  • Watch for Verisign's .WEB launch details and channel-partner availability, expected later in 2026.
  • Mark the calendar for ICANN 87 in Bali (October 17–22), where Bali's .BALI application is expected and the DNSSEC workshop takes place on October 21.
  • Track the .DOT and Google (.EAT, .HERE, .FLY) launch windows if you're planning defensive or brand registrations. Sunrise and Early Access dates land through the fall.
  • Nominations for the ccNSO-appointed ICANN board seat are open now for anyone in the ccTLD community.
