El Public Interest Registry (PIR) (Registro de Interés Público, por sus siglas en inglés) ha trabajado en estrecha colaboración con la comunidad mundial de organizaciones no gubernamentales a fin de desarrollar un proceso de validación para el registro de las .NGO y .ONG. - Se centran en actuar en el interés público: Ya sea en apoyo de la educación o de la salud, del medio ambiente o de los derechos humanos, los miembros de la comunidad trabajan para el bien de la humanidad y/o la preservación del planeta y no fomentan la discriminación ni la intolerancia.
- Son entidades sin ánimo de lucro/no centradas en el lucro: Si bien muchas NGOs y ONGs participan en actividades comerciales o generan ingresos en apoyo de sus misiones, los miembros de la comunidad no reconocen utilidades ni retienen ganancias.

*PIR has determined that organizations formed under the laws of the People's Republic of China (or any territory thereof) do not meet the criteria "Limited Government Influence" and "Independent Actors." Accordingly, prospective registrants from China and its territories should not register .NGO and .ONG domains as they will not meet PIR's Eligibility Requirements. In the event PIR discovers that a .NGO and .ONG domain is registered by an organization organized under the laws of the People's Republic of China (or any territory thereof), PIR will delete the registration for failing to meet our Eligibility Requirements.
