Want to know the best way to celebrate Cinco De Mayo this year? We break it down for you in three simple steps:

Smart Ways to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

1. KNOW THE HISTORY

Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. Their victory became a symbol of unity and strength within the Mexican community. While this event is not widely celebrated annually in Mexico, marketing campaigns by American beer companies over the years have caused us to associate Cinco De Mayo with heavy drinking and Mexican stereotypes.

2. CELEBRATE RESPONSIBLY

Remember that Mexican culture still exists on days besides May 5th. That being said, avoid inappropriate acts like dressing up like a "Mexican", using racial slurs, or feeding into other harmful Mexican stereotypes. There is nothing wrong with celebrating a culture—as long as it is done respectfully and tastefully.

3. SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE!

However you decide to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, let the people you're celebrating with know that you're celebrating the victory of the Mexican army over the French! You'll be surprised how many people thought today was Mexican Independence Day.

Happy Cinco De Mayo from Team Dynadot!
