5 Tips on How to Be Professional

You may or may not have heard of a little restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ called Amy's Baking Company. It recently made headlines after a stint on celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's show Kitchen Nightmares. The show features failing restaurants that Ramsay tries to help turn around. Let's just say that the show did not go well for either party (you can watch it yourself and see what I mean) and since then the owners of Amy's Baking Company have kept their 15 minutes of fame going with some very unprofessional Facebook posts (which you'll also see if you click through to watch the episode).

Now that you've seen a great example of how to be unprofessional, let's focus on some tips for how to be professional:

1. Be Punctual - That's right, you need to arrive to meetings before they start (or at least right on time). Making others wait for you sends the message that your time is more important than theirs.

2. Dress Professionally - I guess you could actually just say dress appropriately here. Many companies (especially tech companies) have adopted a more casual dress code, so it is really just about knowing how to dress for different situations. If you're unsure of the dress code, ask. If you can't ask, then you'll have to use your best judgement, but the rule is usually that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed.

3. Use Proper Grammar - If you are writing an email you need to use capitalization (this includes I), use the apostrophe, and especially use commas! Let me give you an entertaining example of what happens when you don't use commas:

*According to Tails Magazine, this infamous (and 'comma-less') cover is a Photoshopped fake. I am unsure if this is true or not, but either way it's a great example. Seriously people - commas, not cannibalism!

4. Don't Over Promise and Under Deliver - You may think never saying no makes you look great, but the reality is you won't look so great when you can't actually follow through on everything. Once you've agreed to do something, you need to do it. Be realistic about how much you can do, and if you can, do the opposite - under promise and over deliver.

5. Don't Bash Co-Workers, Customers, or Competitors - Well, you've already seen an example of this (see above if you skipped the first paragraph). Social media and the Internet can be your company's voice, but you need to make sure it's not a negative one. As you can see deleting posts from your social media pages doesn't actually make your posts disappear. The best policy is to not make those types of posts in the first place. You need to keep it civil even if you're dealing with someone who is not.

Now some of these tips may seem like no-brainers, but think about how often you see people and companies not following them. Remember that just because the people around you are being unprofessional doesn't mean that you need to fall into that trap.
