- Sunday Punday on a Hilarious Holiday: It's Scrabble Day!
Today is the day we celebrate everyone's favorite word game, Scrabble! If you have a game board, you should break it out today and play. Did you know that Scrabble celebrated it's 65th birthday last year in 2013? Here are some other fun facts about Scrabble: Scrabble was invented by Alfred Butts, who wanted to create a word game that combined crossword puzzles, anagrams, and chance. The original name for Scrabble was Lexico. The game was later renamed Scrabble, which means "to grope frantically." Alfred Butts used the New York Times to help him figure out the frequency and point values of each letter. For example, he discovered that E was the most frequently used vowel. Today, Scrabble is produced in 29 different languages as well as braille and low vision versions. The Guinness world record for the most Scrabble games played simultaneously was 521 games by 1,042 players. It was organized by Northland Secondary School, Mattel South East Asia, and Schools Scrabble Club in Singapore. So, now you're probably wondering how Scrabble can help you find a great domain name! Well, obviously it helps with the creative word skills you sometimes need to come up with an idea for an available domain name, but it's also helpful with coming up with domain hacks! A domains hack is a domain that combines the domain name with the top-level domain (TLD) to spell out a word or saying such as ComeWith.ME or Aweso.ME. If you're looking to register a fun domain hack, a helpful website to use is ScrabbleFinder.com. Scrabble Finder is great for cheating, er, helping with Scrabble and great for helping you figure out what words end in me for example. It even organizes the words by length! So, if you're looking for a word ending in me, us, ws, in, at, or any other TLD, I recommend using Scrabble Finder to help you come up with and register your next perfect domain hack! - Meme Monday: One Does Not Simply Ignore Heartbleed
In case some of you are still unsure as to what the Heartbleed bug is all about - it's basically a defect in security software which enables a potential hacker to retrieve information they should not be able to access from a remote service such as passwords, emails, documents etc. As a precaution, we have already made necessary adjustments to combat the Heartbleed issue. We also sent out a recent email to our customers recommending them to change their passwords to prevent their information from being vulnerable to attackers. We want our customers to be well informed on any issues regarding the safety and privacy of their information. And although we have no control over your password changing decisions, we can offer you some pointers on how to create a secure password with these 5 Password Tips. - Meme Monday: Don't Live Dangerously When It Comes to the Spelling of Your Domain!
If you spend any amount of time on the Internet, you may have noticed that spelling and grammar mistakes run rampant. In fact, a school in Brazil used this to their advantage to teach students proper English by challenging them to play grammar cop to their favorite celebrities on Twitter. I think this is a great idea and more schools should do this. Maybe it will even get people to start using better spelling, grammar, and punctuation online! Personally, I still try to use proper spelling (no u, it's you), punctuation (commas save lives people, "let's eat grandma" needs a comma otherwise you're a cannibal!), and even capitalization (I not i, seriously this is a pet peeve of mine) as much as possible even on Twitter and when I text. Although I think everyone should always strive to do this in all of their writing, there is one place where it is especially important - your domain name. Now, you can't use punctuation or capitalization, so don't worry about that, but proper spelling is very important. When it comes to domains, you want to register something that is short, memorable, and easy to spell. This doesn't necessarily mean it's spelled correctly - flickr is a good example of this - but it does mean that you should pay attention and make sure you're registering the right spelling that you want before hitting submit. If you do want to go with a unique spelling, you should consider how this will affect your customer's ability to find your website. Is your unique spelling too complicated for customers to remember? You don't want to be losing out on tons of traffic going to the correctly spelled version of your domain name. Even if your domain isn't spelled wrong, you should also consider how customers might spell it wrong and potentially register your domain name in those possible spellings. For example, we also own dinadot.com and even dinodot.com. No matter what type of spelling you decide is best for your domain, again make sure it is the right spelling that you want before hitting submit. We have had customers who have contacted us after placing their order only to realize they registered jerrysrestarant.com instead of jerrysrestaurant.com. This is an easy mistake to make as we have all gotten used to autocorrect helping us along. Plus, if you've typed in several domain options, you may just not have noticed that one letter that's missing. And I'm sure many of you have seen a paragraph of words where only the first and last letter are in the correct place, yet most of us can still read the whole paragraph with minimal effort: fi yuo cna raed tihs, yuo hvae a sgtrane mnid too. Cna yuo raed tihs? Olny 55 plepoe out of 100 can. All I'm saying is when it comes to registering your domain, double and even triple check your spelling before submitting your order. Get a second set of eyes to look at it, copy and paste it into Google (you may need to add in the spaces), or even go old school and use a dictionary to check your spelling. Although we do offer domain grace deletion for several of our domain extensions, this is not something you should count on to "return" your domain due to a spelling error. In many cases, there will be a fee, plus there is no guarantee you'll be able to grace delete the domain since it is limited. Want more memes? - Sunday Punday: Nuts Are So Expensive These Days They Cost an Almond a Leg!
Happy Almond Day! Nuts may be expensive, but when they're as delicious as the almond, it's worth it! Here are a few fun facts about almonds in honor of National Almond Day! Almost all almonds in the US come from California. (You're welcome.) Almonds require bees for pollination. In order to pollinate California's almonds, nearly 1 million bee hives are brought into the state from around the US each February. Almonds grow inside of a fuzzy hull and are technically a seed. Almonds are one of the best sources of the antioxidant vitamin E. One ounce of almonds gives you more than a third of the Daily Value. The main fat in almonds is heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Almonds are used in many desserts around the world including some wedding sweets in Greece, pastry fillings in Morocco, and as a base for amaretti in Italy. Want more fun puns? - Meme Monday: That Moment When You Win an Auction
The waiting game can be a battle that seems to last longer than time itself- especially when you've got your heart set on a particular domain that's in auction with 6 hours and 23 minutes still left to spare. Sadly, no one's invented a machine that allows us to fast forward time, so in any auction you'll have to wait out the full seven days in order for the auction winner to be determined. Luckily, you can bid at anytime during this auction period. And to makes things a bit more interesting, you also have the option placing a proxy bid, which automatically places a higher bid than current minimum bid. So with that being said- let the bidding wars begin! After the seven days are over, the highest bidder has two days to pay for the auction. Once the auction is paid for, the domain will be moved into your Dynadot account within about four days. Even though you may have won the bidding war, the original registrant is given a grace period to renew their domain even if it's won in our expired domain auctions. Depending on the domain, the grace period typically lasts 40 days. If the domain is renewed within that grace period, the expired auction order will be cancelled and the payment will be refunded. Participating in auctions can be a time consuming task, but you never know what you're going to find. If someone forgets to renew their useful and creative domain- it's up for grabs! So be sure to check out our expired auctions from time to time to see what domains become available! Still feeling unsure about the expired auction process? Don't worry, we've got answers to all your expired auction questions in our help files! Happy bidding everyone (: Want more memes?
