2. What is a Premium Domain?

A premium domain is a domain that has been previously registered, often because it has the potential of becoming a memorable web address. Premium domains have high marketing potential and many of them already receive significant traffic.

Premium domains are also often referred to as: aftermarket domains, secondary market domains, high-value domains, great domains, or top domains.

4. How come "mydomain.com" works, but "www.mydomain.com" does not?

Usually, after you register a domain name, you type in "www.mydomain.com" into your browser to make sure it was registered ok. So now the IP address for the Dynadot parking page is stored on your local name server (run by your internet service provider).

Name servers cache IP addresses for efficiency, so they don't have to do a full lookup every time you visit your domain. Cache entries usually last a few days. For the next few days, when you type "www.mydomain.com" into your browser, the local name server will return the cached IP address, without checking if it has changed.

Now you set your domain to a new IP address, for example from your webhost. A lookup of "www.mydomain.com" will return the old IP address, because of caching. A lookup of "mydomain.com" will get the new value, because "mydomain.com" is a different host whose IP address has not been cached by your local name server.

Often restarting your computer will fix the caching problem. If not, you will have to wait a few days for your local name server cache to expire. However, everyone else on the internet will see the correct IP address for your domain, since they are not using your local name server.

To see what the official IP address for your domain is, without any caching, try the IP Tool in your account control panel: Account Signin

To learn more about caching, see this article: Domain Name Server Propagation

7. What are grace hours?

The 'Grace' field in the 'New Domains' domain listing is the amount of time you have left in which you can request that the domain you just registered be deleted for Dynadot account credit.

This may be useful, for example, if you misspelled the domain name you wanted to register or you decide that you want to register a different domain name.

8. Why is my website offline?

There are many reasons why you may not be able to see your website. The majority of these reasons fall into these three categories:

  • The website or the old name server settings for your domain are cached.
  • Your web host has not set up their name servers to handle web requests for your domain yet.
  • You have ordered a web hosting package for a domain name from us, but did not register the actual domain name from a domain registrar.

If your website has been cached in some manner, here are some suggestions on how to clear the cache or go around the issue:

- Press the "Refresh" button on your web browser. This will check if it is your computer that has cached the old website on your computer. If this does not work right away, try doing it again two to three more times. If it still doesn't work, then try clearing your web browser's cached history files.

- Check your domain on another computer that is using a different internet service provider (some times abbreviated as ISP) than you. Some times your internet service provider will cache commonly visited websites to save time.

- Use Altavista's Babel Fish Translation page to display your website in a foreign language. Simply type in the URL for your domain in the "Translate a Web page" field and choose one of the "English to..." options. Click the Translate button, and it will load a translated version of your domain.

Altavista will use their copy of your page instead of your ISP's cached copy; so if you see two different versions of your page, you know your ISP has cached your domain and has not refreshed it.

- Try visiting your domain without the "www" prefix. For example, if you have been checking your website using the url, http://www.mydomain.com, try visiting the url, http://mydomain.com. If you see your website as it should be on the http://mydomain.com version, then you know that your website has either been cached on your computer or by your ISP.

Note: This only works if you have never visited the http://mydomain.com version of your domain before.

If you suspect that your old name server settings have been cached, do an IP lookup to see if your new name server settings have been propagated through the system. Please read the answer to "What is an IP lookup?" question if you need help interpreting your IP lookup results.

If an IP lookup shows that your web host has not configured their name servers to serve your domain, please contact them. Ask them how long it will take for them to get their name servers set up to serve your domain.

If you have ordered a web hosting package from us but did not register the domain name at any domain registrar, you will not be able to see your website until you register the actual domain name. You need both the domain name and a web hosting plan to build a website.

Basically a domain name is like a mailing address while a web hosting plan provides the actual land space or "lot" at that address. You cannot have one without the other.

9. I registered the wrong domain. What can I do?

Email us as soon as you realize you've made a mistake. Usually we can delete the domain and issue you an account credit within 5 days of registration.

You can also submit a "Grace Period Deletion Request" in your account.

NOTE: UK and EU domains can not be grace deleted. More details can be found on our Grace Deletions page.

10. Why is my name listed in the Whois database? I thought my name would be private since I ordered your domain privacy.

What you want is a proxy service to hide your name and contact information. We do not provide a proxy service since this is illegal for us to implement; we would own the domains instead of our customers.

Ownership of the domain is determined by the Whois database. If your name is not listed as the registrant of the domain, you are not considered the owner of the domain.

We offer a forwarding service instead, which is not only legal for us to implement, but safe for our customers. We have written an article about the dangers of using a proxy service: Problems with Proxy Registration and Related Services.

12. Is there a drawback for using stealth forwarding?

Yes, there is a drawback when you use stealth forwarding. Your visitor will not be able to see the subdirectory structure of your website as he/she navigates through your website, and he/she will not be able to bookmark a specific page on your website when you use stealth forwarding.

This is because stealth forwarding uses frames and only serves to forward a visitor to the web page you have specified in the stealth forwarding option. Once your visitor has reached your website, the URL in the address bar will not change no matter which page he/she navigates to until he/she reaches a web page which breaks out of the frames. Once a visitor breaks out of the frames, the website's real URL address will be visible in the web browser's URL bar.

For example, say you have a page, http://name.somedomain.com/folder/somepage.html and when you use stealth forwarding, you want http://www.myexample.org/folder/somepage.html to show up instead of http://name.somedomain.com/folder/somepage.html. This will not work with stealth forwarding since your domain name can only hide the URL of your website and will always show up as http://www.myexample.org/.

If you want to be able to see your subdirectory structure, then you must find a web hosting plan for your domain so your files are all hosted on myexample.org instead of at name.somedomain.com.

16. How many domains will be processed each day using the Data Analyzer Tool?

There is no limit to the number of domains you can submit. The number of domains that you will receive results for each day depends on your pricing level and your total spending amount:

Super Bulk - at least 1000 results per day
Bulk - at least 100 results per day
Regular - at least 10 results per day

Anything above that would depend on your total spending amount. Basically, the more you spend with us, the more domains you will receive results for per day.

17. I want you to get a domain that has just expired and hold it for me. Can you do this?

No, we cannot do this for you since we are not in the business of grabbing domain names when they expire. You will need to use a service such as Snapnames to grab a domain that is about to or has already expired.

18. If I register a domain name through your company, who is the owner? Is it me or Dynadot?

You are the owner of the domain names that you register through us. As long as you keep renewing the domain, you are the owner. If you don't renew, then the domain is deleted, and someone else can become the owner.

19. Can I transfer my domain from Dynadot to a different domain registrar?

Yes, you can transfer your domains to another domain registrar. There is no fee or penalty to do this, however, there are some restrictions:

  • Domains that have expired cannot be transferred. You must renew them through us first.
  • Domains less than 60 days old cannot be transferred. This is a rule enforced by the central registries.
